Snoring is seldom sleep apnoea (English spelling). Sleep apnoea is a cessation of breathing whilst asleep. It is possible for sufferers to cease breathing for up to thirty seconds before starting again. Worst case scenario is to not start again... ever.

Snoring is caused by a number of different problems including sinus-trouble, trachea-obstruction, drinking too much port and sleeping with your gob open like a basking-shark.

I can confirm that the last 2 reasons given by Alex definately work for me

The only time I have had trachea-obstruction is when I fell asleep eating a pizza when I was 17 :?

Alex,

Which came first the Apnea or the snoring?

Regardless, there is no apnea without snoring, just not possible.

Snoring is a symptom of Sleep Apnoea. Loud, stop-start snoring. If you are constantly knackered despite full sleeping periods then you may have SA. The reason is that you will be waking up many times during the night and not breathing properly. Normal snoring is different and is more a nuisance than anything dangerous.

Are there any clinical studies which link port drinking to memory loss?

Poor old Todd can't even remember his name these days, Alex Bridgeman apparently can't remember where he left his computer and I can't remember why I asked this question :?

Having Heart Palpatations, Being over weight and having a large neck, plus doing the stop start snoring and feeling generally knackered, I was convinced I had this.
I was wired up for the night but it was showed my oxygen levels never dropped.
So the Clinical Diagnosis was I was just an over-weight guy, with a large neck, Heart Palpatations, who does the stop start snoring and is generally knackered!
That was revealing!!!

Alan,

When the Doc was running through the lifestyle quesions did you remember to mention that you sit up until 3am most evenings drinking port and messing around with your geeky friends on the internet? Perhaps this would have given the insight he needed to diagnose the cause of the "generally knackered" symptom
