2004 Quinta da Prelada Vintage Port

Post by Ronald Wortel »

Drank in a restaurant yesterday. They had just received the bottle the same day, so it was still fresh.

Very spirity on the nose, didn't get much else. Dark fruit on the palate with some spicy pepper and bitter dark chocolate. A bit hot on the finish. Fierce tannins. This is mostly about structure, with the tannins being very upfront and the fruit in the back. Very much fun to taste, since I didn't even know Prelada made a VP and I certainly hadn't expected to find it in a restaurant in Amsterdam. I find it difficult to attach a score to this port, since it was obviously closed, but I guess it would be around 86-88, being a good port and giving pleasure on the mid-term.

Didn't know Qta. d. Prelada was already available in The Netherlands; where did you try this?

A very nice restaurant in Amsterdam: Proef on the Overtoom. Their wine list was nothing special, but when we asked for a port with dessert they came up with this bottle. They got it through a hobby importer in Amsterdam, I don't know any names.

Would be fun to try it again if we can find the importer...

I've only had the 2000 Prelada LBV, at Vinlogia in Oporto last year. It was quite good and I brought home a bottle. As IIRC, Vinlogia had bought all of their small 2000 LBV release.

THanks for the review.

Probably most of it, but not all. The website of the Dutch importer gives notice of the LBV as well, and I remember that I tasted it once on a fair as well. Pretty good stuff indeed.

Cool, thanks.
Always nice to see some unknown houses. Might be interesting to buy a bottle and try it.

Hello Ronald.
I'm happy to see, once again that Holland it's really being invaded by small Producers Port, infact the VP 2004 from Prelada that you have just drank I open a bottle of that everyday!;) it's a good reliable 2004, altough the last time I had Roy and the group they all preferred a 2002 Quinta da Revolta!
But what I STRONGLYYYY suggest you is you MUST find at all costs a bottle of LBV 2000 from Prelada, it's by far for me the best LBV I ever tried, it's a treasure!!!
Go for it!!! 8--) 8--) 8--)
