1991 Morgan Vintage Port

Post by Al B. »

I still have some of this left in the decanter to finish off tonight. Once I've finished it I will craft the whole thing into a tasting note and post there. But for now, here are my initial impressions of this wine:

A bottle from the Morgan cellar clearance, via Christies

After 1 hour in the decanter the wine was a deep red with dark centre and a mahogany rim - surprisingly developed colour. The nose was of dusty blackberries. In the mouth the first impression was dusty / fusty sweetness but then layers of sweet fruit came through in the mid-palate with a nice structure around some vaguely peppery (in a nice way) soft tannins. The alcohol protruded a little too much. The aftertaste was nothing at first but then gradually became noticeable and stayed around for a long time as a chocolately / fruity residue. An enjoyable wine without being anything stellar. 5/5.

After 2½ hours in the decanter there was less on the nose, more alcohol on the mid palate and a burn on swallowing that was not noticeable when the first TN was taken. The same wonderful aftertaste was certainly still present.

After 7 hours in the decanter the nose had changed to reveal more fruit and less dustiness. The alcohol was fully integrated in the wine and the structure was provided by the acidity that was present. Sadly, the aftertaste had started to disappear.

After 13 hours the alcohol was back and was too aggressive for my liking. The aftertaste was also missing. On an overall performance, I would rate this bottle as 4/4 rather than 5/5 or 88/100. If you fancy one of these, based on my experience with this one bottle, I would recommend a fairly short decant time.

Al,
Are you the guy who posted a photo of your cellar and basically had a warehouse of this stuff?

No, that wasn't me that posted the picture - that was Tom. But his cellar is where my meagre 6 (now 5) bottles came from.

An update on the wine. 1½ days after decanting the fire was still there with the alcohol showing far more strongly than I would like, but the aftertaste is also back. Long and lingering nuances of bitter chocolate, very nice.

Still not a great wine though. I'm happy to have half a dozen bottles and will enjoy drinking my way through as an everyday house port but its not a wine that I will search out in desperation.
