TN: 1992 Niepoort Vintage Port

The Ports ‘label’ is screen printed onto the glass, which is very smart. Niepoort were celebrating their 150 year Jubilee (1842 – 1992) and this is stated on the bottle. I have not seen many TN’s on this youngish Port, but had bought a case of 12 bottles a few years ago. Decanted using the “Roy Hersh” method.

On decanting – zero hours
At first my impression was a deep garnet. The nose gave off soft fresh dates, plenty of red cherry aromas as well, with the alcohol noticeable but not harsh. The palate is velvet rich with plenty of cherry and raspberry fruit, with balanced and warming alcohol. The mid-palate is a level playing field, and the finish tails off nicely after at least 30 seconds. Yes it’s young but even on pouring it is drinkable and definitely shows class. More soon...

After 4 hours
Slightly darker in colour, the nose shows more of the red cherry fruit and less alcohol. This is also true of the palate, where the length is now smoother, richer, longer. The alcohol is firmly in the background, almost integrated. Even more enjoyable.

After 12 hours
This has settled down into a really enjoyable red fruit-driven Port. Hardly any alcohol noticeable.
