For The Love Of Port

I have been offered some 80 and 87 Nacional and was wondering if anyone had any recent experience on these wines. Neither of these vintages seem to appear in many tastings. Spectator has favourably reviewed the 87 (94/100) but is down on the 80 (80/100). Roy's notes show the opposite (87: 84/100 & 80: 92/100). Roy mentions that this 87 bottle had not shown as well as others. I'd be interested to know where these sit overall so any tasting experience would be welcome.

To add another good wine critic note, Michael Broadbent did give Nacional 87 a five star rating.

I did taste the 87 this last Christmass with friends. Unfortunately it was served at the end of the night like it happens too many times after too many wines.At nearly 20 years of age, it was very smooth, tannins were completly melted. The color was deep garnet but the tawny edge was surprisingly large. The flavours where dominated by dried fruits, mainly plums, figs and dates, some tobacco and cocoa too. It was not very long but the concentration of flavours, the weight of the wine on the palate and the texture(almost viscous) were really impressive. Some VP do not have that concentration in their youth. I would have score that around 17/20-17.5/20

Of course like any expensive wine, it is not great QPR. What is interesting is that the Nacional from the 80's are more acessible price wise than the old or new release so you can catch the spirit of Nacional.

For my taste it was lacking the freshness that makes old Port so interesting and I would not speculate on the miles this Port can still achieve with such low acidity and melted tannins as it is my only mature Nacional.

Thanks Frederick, I was remiss not to look up Broadbent. It will be interesting to see what he says of the '80 too. Excuse my ignorance. What is QPR?
