10 year old Tawny Port by Kirkland -- (made by Fonseca) (b. 2006)

Post by Andy Velebil »

This is a BOB (Buyers own Brand) from the Costco chain (Kirkland is their "own" brand). Costco is a volume discount store that has some good stuff at even better prices at times. The back label says this is a Fonseca 10 yr. Alex R. found this bottle for me to try and I've had it over the past several days, slightly chilled as it has been rather hot here recently (low to mid 90's).

Color is a typical 10 year, nose is not very expressive but there is definite maple and mohogany and a little spice. The palate has some solid acidity, make that very prominate acidity, that has finally started to fade on the 3rd day of being open. Not very complex on the palate with a mint/eucalyptus and spice dominating. Under those there is some brown sugar, slight oak, and some pleasant heat that rounds out a rather short finish. This is not a stellar 10 year but is a decent QPR. IIRC, this retails for about $16-17, which is on the inexpensive side for a 10 yr. 85 points.

How do you compare it to the standard Fonseca 10? The both do taste quite different. I may actually like the Kirkland one better- Costco sells both.

Off the top of my head, I can't recall ever having the Fonseca 10 yr. So I cannot give you an opinion yet. But I will try to find a bottle and give it a go. Although I cannot recall ever seeing the Fonseca 10 for sale around my area, so it may be a while.

thanks Alex. I'll have to pick up a bottle and see how it stacks up.
