For The Love Of Port

I need to tong a bottle for New Years Eve...(1978 Croft Roeda). No way to do it tomorrow. Cam I do it tonight and immediately put a T-Stopper in until I really decant tomorrow about 3-4 hours ahead of party?

If you have a big enough t-stopper which you probably don't have. The opening is significantly larger the farther down the neck you go, especially on older bottles. Probably best to tong, decant into a spare bottle, cork, then pour back into tonged bottle just before leaving for your gathering (or once you get there).

Just tong the bottle, pour out the wine, rinse bottle, pour back in and put the neck back on the bottles with a note saying not to touch bottle... If you have to transport, pour into another wine bottle...

Thank you....opened it last night, decanted and into another bottle. Small taste on opening was not too good---poured a small amount for breakfast and let it air for 20 minutes--rather nice.

out of interest how did you source your port tongs? Have had a awful hard time finding them in the states. I have 2 pairs that go over the top of the bottle, am looking for the ones that go around the neck instead. Also with all the larger format bottles I have purchased (thanks Julian (aka jdaw) from the 2011 vintage I have started to think about large format port tongs as well.

I got them from Portugal==ordered them there and they were mailed. Also have over the top type.

Why not try a blacksmith??

Call the port houses in VNG and have them send you one.

I've picked up all of mine in Portugal except one. It was made by a wine aquatint's company here in the states when the cheap on her bought in Porto fell apart the first time used them. Made of stainless steel and welded so beefy they're massive. But work great, but take a tad longer to heat up.

I have the side kind and I think they came from portwine.com, but checking that site now, they just have the top kind now. As for bigger bottles, my tongs have a larger circle before the smaller end circle.
