1985 Ramos Pinto Vintage Port

Post by Glenn E. »

From day 1 of the 1985 horizontal, 24-25 Jan 2015, Holiday Inn Issaquah. All Ports were tasted blind. Unless otherwise noted, Ports were decanted for ~4 hours the morning of the tasting. The ones that I decanted received ~8 hours of decant overnight and were then stoppered for another ~6 hours until the tasting.

1985 Ramos Pinto Vintage Port

Color: Very dark garnet, opaque center

Nose: Rich, dark fruits, light meat-like smell, some light smoke. Almost a faint beef jerky?

Palate: Dark black cherry, plum, some boysenberry. Medium body. Very faint eucalyptus. Not much tannins to start, but more showed up with time in the glass.

Score: 91 points. I marked this down as possibly being an underperforming bottle of Fonseca and was pleasantly surprised to find out it was Ramos Pinto. I still suspect it was an underperforming bottle, but not by as much as it would have had to have been in order to be the Fonseca.
