From day 2 of the 1985 horizontal, 24-25 Jan 2015, Holiday Inn Issaquah. All Ports were tasted blind. Unless otherwise noted, Ports were decanted for ~4 hours the morning of the tasting. The ones that I decanted received ~8 hours of decant overnight and were then stoppered for another ~6 hours until the tasting.
1985 Kopke Vintage Port
Color: Gem-like, very rich garnet color. The prettiest glass of the day by far.
Nose: Faint graphite, cream cheese frosting, blackberry.
Palate: Rich and complex. Stone fruits like plum and black cherry. Good tannins and acidity. Needs another 5-10 years. This really sets the standard for the rest of the day.
Score: 93 points. Another in a recent series of unexpected excellent showings for Kopke VPs. This is really an underrated house for Vintage Port, possibly because their tawnies are absolutely top flight. Their SQVP - Quinta S. Luiz - is also stellar when you can find it.
