NV Rocha 40 Year Old Tawny Port

Post by Eric Menchen »

Tasted blind. Bottled 2005. With a light haze, this is much more red than most of the other wines tasted today (40 year old tawnies and some older colheitas). Much more interesting aromas than the previous wine (Kopke 40). There is a little alcohol, but it is not too distracting. Smells of raisin and fif, with a permeating aroma. Really nice body-good balance of sweetness and warmth. The warmth carries through the finish. This is what I want my 40 year old tawny to taste like, aged but not stale, integrated but not bland. There is some nice acid for freshness, and good sugar to coat the mouth and carry the finish. 94+ points. This was the wine of the flight (against Kopke 40, 1958 Krohn Colheita, and 50 Year Old Yalumba).
