Opened at the Showdown at Juarez Canyon BBQ competition in Oregon City, Oregon alongside a 1985 Gould Campbell Vintage Port. I wanted to really show off the difference between ruby and tawny Ports. Purchased directly from Wineworth during an FTLOP buying opportunity.

1984 Kopke Colheita
bottled 2013

Color: Clean and clear orange-tawny color with a honey-like quality. Orange highlights, some yellow near the rim.

Nose: PECANS. Lots of pecans. Some almond/marzipan, possibly also some hazelnut. A bit of butterscotch and caramel to round things out.

Palate: Silky texture with a medium (possibly even light) body. Lots of light caramel, some brown sugar and vanilla, some almond. There's a dried fruit that I can't quite place... not quite apricot, not quite date... something in between. Maybe a little bit of mango or passionfruit as well.

Finish: Good length. Brown sugar and caramel, with a tail of tart apples.

Score: 92 points. Easy on the palate and very pleasant. The older versions ('74 and '64) are deeper and more complex, but I get the feeling that this one might eventually turn into those. It's great right now, though, so Kopke has a tough choice - sell it as-is or see if it will continue to develop? I don't see either answer being wrong.

I wish I could describe a port like You!

The Kopke Colheita 1984, was my "Port of the summer 2015". Easy, pleasant and a 100 % succes round the table.
And my guess is Yes Kopke, keep a Barrel or two with this 1984 juice, and put it on the market again in 10 years time.
