Port wood chips

Post by Jasper A. »

This weekend i was at a wholesale store, were they sell a lot of stuff for restaurants.
Here they had wood chips made of used port barrels.

So with the weather great i opened it yesterday. Wow, wat a sent, like i was in Vila Nova de Gaia again visiting a cellar.
I smoked some chicken with the wood, really nice flavour.

Anyone else tried them before?

I have not seen those in particular, but am quite intrigued. Wood chips are commonly used by brewers and winemakers to add flavor without having to use a barrel. I tend to prefer using an actual barrel, but in my parts a Port barrel is about 4x the cost of a regular wine barrel, so perhaps I should see if I can find those.

No, never seen them. I'm sure it would make the BBQ smell good.

I make beer, and regularly age it in wine and spirit barrels.

Oké.. My oldest son sometimes makes beer also, but I don't think he uses wooden barrels. Nice!

Why on earth would you waste that port in wood? Have you been drinking the wrong thing lately? Lol

I was kidding on the '70 Fonseca; that port is more for cooking :snooty:

Any port would do for soaking wood chips.
