TN: 2012 Viúva Gomes Colares DOC Vinho Tinto

Post by Eric Menchen »

Purchased at GN, in a 500 ml bottle, upon which appears "Collares" on the main label, and the modern spelling of "Colares" in the glass and on the back label.

Pop and pour, I'm hit by that salty rustic Ramisco aroma. There also is some sweet berry fruit, strawberry and blueberry, and leather. The first sip packs a tannic pucker and plenty of acid. Time to prepare the accompaniments ... O.k., that was a good idea to smell first, because I'm having this with some stinky cheeses and presunto, and not getting a lot of new aromas. There was a possible whiff of wood, somewhere between cedar and sandalwood. The flavor is nice, with tangy sour fruit, but not overly complex. I think there might be a hint of pimenta in there, more red than green. Later I smelled a tropical aroma, maybe even mango-pineapple? I'm wondering what odd mix of my food might have led to that. 90-91 points.
