1991 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

This was the first year the Symingtons used cooling in the lagars during treading. This has much better color than the 1989 and 1990. Much more consitant with its age. Good solid strawberry and blackberry nose. Palate has lots of pepper, plums, leather, berries, and solid structure and a long finish. 92 poitns

I tried this last night. It was at the end of a Barolo tasting and we pour straight from the bottle :)

First sniff reveals intense notes of rose pepper, then great concentrations of candied figs and straberries. Palate is showing good concentration, really showing viscosity, acidity is low, the fruit is ripe and sweet on notes of pepper, strawberries, figs and plums, long candied fruit finish. While I like my VP with a touch more acidity, this one did surprise me with great balance and freshness overall nevertheless. At 17 years of age this Port has mostly integrated tannins, still some primary but mostly secondary fruit flavours. A Port that really enjoyable to drink right now while there is no hurry to drink up the stash, it should age gracefuly for a couple more decades. Solid 17/20
