Sandeman "Don" porcelain bottle??

Post by Andy Velebil »

While I was up north a few weeks ago I went to dinner with some serious wine drinkers and home wine makers. One of them was 80 years old and after talking about Port for awhile, he gave me this bottle. He wanted it to go to a good home, someone that would enjoy having it...I guess he finally found the right Port-Nerd! I am very grateful for the bottle and it now sits proudly on display with my bottle collection.

He said he's had the bottle for over 30 years, as best as he could remember. He could not recall where he got it or what was in it. The bottle is in perfect condition, the t-cork stopper has a little wear on the white paint. The bottom of the bottle says...

Wedgewood
of Etruria & Barlaston
Made in England
Moonstone

Anyone have any information about this cool bottle.
(I'll move the pics to the photo section in a few days, just wanted to put them here so people can easily see them)

That's a cool bottle. I wonder what the IVDP would have to say about it today!

Having just typed "Wedgwood" and "Sandeman" into Google, it appears that yours is one of a pair which contained Scotch and Cream Sherry, respectively:

In fact, it appears there is an entire website devoted to them...

Thanks for the info and the website is quite a history lesson. Looks like it was Scotch, not Port, that was held in the decanter. Either way, its a cool bottle and will remain on display.

It is NOT Port. Put it on Ebay! :D

How dare you say that about my new mascot "Ding Don" opps, I mean "The Don" It will never be sold lest hell freezes over and I can trade it for a full bottle of Port to drink so I can stay warm

Andy, you say that your bottle’s t-cork is worn...this seems like a perfect replacement!
