1966 Messias Colheita [b. 2008]
Decanted for 7½ hours before being consumed after an absolutely divine Father’s Day dinner where I got to show off my culinary talents (or pretend I had some) to the wife.
Light brown and tawny orange colour with slight hints of rose throughout. Viscous, thick yet clear tears run down the sides of the glass with a very minute hint of brown. When held at an angle some yellow appears near the edges with a clear meniscus.
Immediately the nose of caramel, maple syrup and vanilla promised great things. Some wood aromas lingered and a slight amount of spirit in the nose at decanting time disappeared after an hour and was gone by the time we were drinking.
Exceptionally smooth with vanilla, caramel and a complex palate with multiple flavours involved, some that were not quite identifiable. Some orange peel showed up late to the game on days 2 and 3 and was pronounced enough for me to make a distinct note on it. A bit of grip is present and it grabs the attention and lingers around for a long time. This Port has a very long finish, well over 45 seconds and I was still tasting its complex array of flavours, which only served to make my mouth water for more.
This is a fabulous Colheita, definitely the oldest I have tried and both myself and my wife enjoyed it immensely. It declined in days 2 and 3 a tad, and the alcohol became a bit pronounced, but I am ashamed to say that there was indeed a single small glass left to determine on day 4 that the alcohol seemed to have blown off.
