For The Love Of Port

The cork on the 1950 Ferreira was clearly branded "1950 re-corked in 1986". It was a light rust-like color in the glass and had a thin watery consistency. It was hot on the nose, even after 4 hours of decanting. This did change and after several more hours it began to show scents of cedar, maple syrup, and caramel. It tasted like light brown sugar with a hint of strawberry and had a woody finish mixed with pipe tobacco. This was an interesting Port that really opened up after six hours.

The clear rusty color of this port was clearly indicating that it had better days, the color was quickly acquiring brown and green notes too, signs of its incapability to stand againts oxydation. Nonetheless, it remained enjoyable to drink troughout the night.

First nose of old wood and fresh banana, some sweetness with candied caramel flavours too. On the palate, the entry is very sweet, candied nuts, caramel flavours, good lenght. This port needed 1 hour to reach its peek of quality as it needed to integrate the acidity and the heat from the alcohol. 16/20
