raisins and honey, a bit thin (it followed the 77 fonseca), and alot of heat.

about a 91 pointer for me. it was last of the evening of about 15 wines so my palate may have been a bit fatigued…

wine-searcher shows no availability in the USA (had this in montreal), i'd love to find it again and give it a chance on it's own.

Tough for any VP to come on the heels of a '77 Fonseca! Glad you enjoyed it. i recently had it and will have to check my notes when i get home, but I also remember a touch of heat on it.

Michael,

Did you have this with the local "Slope" gang? Sorry I missed you last week. I was in SIPS on 5th Ave. down by Warren St. or so and it is quite a fun shop and I discussed upgrading their Port selection (Madeira too) with the manager. Coincidentally, a WA winemaker who I am friends with, walked into Sips to show them his wines, while I was there. Talk about wildly unlikely happenings.

Anyway, the 1984 is a serviceable Colheita and next time I come to town, I'll bring one that is stellar for you to try if you like the Colheita style.

Thank you for posting your TN here! Good to have you back for a visit to :ftlop:

Best regards,

Roy

Michael,

Did you get to meet any of the :ftlop: Port loving gang up in Montreal? How did you even know about the Port tasting up there?

If you haven't seen it yet ... there is going to be a :ftlop: weekend of Port here in Seattle, at the end of January. Have a look at the Travel Forum section below this one here and you'll find out more details. It would be great if you and Mrs. W would join us and get to know a whole slew of Port lovers from the US, UK and hopefully Canada too.

BTW, do you have any room in your Slope gang for one other wine lover that I know of in your area?

sure, hook me and your pal up. i have a few different groups here in the slope, i'm sure i can find a home for him! :)

i've known bman(bob) in ottawa for a few years, and a few of the others from WS site and offlines. the two ports were after the fact, it wasn't a true port event...

i'll look into seattle, but me and kat were just planning ahead to late jan or feb to somewhere warm, like the bahamas! :hello:

Tasting of Kopke Colheita Ports (all bottled 2007)
The tasting was on March 11, 2009 and was conducted single-blind, with the order of tasting unknown. Wines were not decanted but poured into the glass about an hour before the tasting commenced. Approx 50 people attended (and voted). The tasting notes are mine alone.
The ranking of the wines is given both for me (1-8) and the overall group consensus (1-8), and the position on the tasting map is also noted (wine A-H), although people could taste in any order. Cost (in Canadian $) is also noted.
NOTE: Overall assessment was that these ports showed ‘just OK’ – obviously a couple were extremely good, but overall the price/quality ratio was too adverse to consider these on a regular basis. Nevertheless the #1 finisher (1952) was in a class by itself and the 96 & 97 were well adrift at the bottom. The 74, 81 & 84 were essentially in a ‘statistical tie’ for 3/4/5.

1984 Colheita (Bottled 2007): My rank #5, Group rank #3, Wine E, $55 Cdn
Light-medium tawny with some garnet still left in the middle. A touch of yellow at the rim.
On the nose – solid orange peel – lacked any complexity (or subtlety)
However, still plenty of acid in the taste, followed by vanilla then alcohol. This hot finish wasn’t particularly enticing – but my estimate was that the components here hadn’t yet ‘marrried’. Everything is still there and this could evolve with more harmony over time.
