For The Love Of Port

While I could find some threads which mentioned the 1980 Warre, I couldn't seem to find any separate tasting thread. My apologies if I've duplicated threads!

1980 Warre Porto Vintage (Portugal, Douro, Porto) $35.99 (1998)
91 points: Cork crumbled apart. On opening, no bricking. V. tight nose, hints of black cherry, black raspberry, dark chocolate, and grape jelly. All black fruit upfront. No tannins, dark chocolate syrup finish. 90 on opening.

5 1/2 hours in the decanter: nose still pretty tight, but red cherry is stronger, the hint of dark chocolate still there. Powerful black cherry upfront with that dark chocolate still in the background. Very light tannins, light acidity (mostly in the finish), just a hint of heat in the finish. However, the chocolate reverses position with the black cherry, overwhelming the finish, picking up some vanilla from the mid-point to the end. Moderately long finish. This only opened up slightly, adding some complexity.


Much richer, if not much more complex, than my tasting notes from 1996 (of a bottle bought at the same time, plus two 1/2 bottles) indicated.

Thanks for the TN on this one. For some reason I don't see many 1980 TN's, not sure why. I've moved this to the Tasting Note section where our great user tasting note data base is getting larger everyday thanks to all of you

Sure seems like the most rare of the major 80's vintages... Only had a couple of the 1980 vintages and both were pretty good, but not blockbusters. The Warre really sounds like a winner; not sure if I have had the 80 Warre or not, but seeing how they are one of the most consistent post-war brands... I would have high expectations.

Don't worry about duplicating threads in the TN section - we do it all the time. Each TN is for a unique experience, so the separate threads are appropriate.

No kidding....Although not widely declared, the 1987 being even more rare on TN's than '80.

Thanks for the really fine impressions. Glad you posted this and it is not a VP that I see people trying much, so this will be a good benchmark. I hope you will come back to post more often as obviously you enjoy and certainly understand good Port.

Thanks. I was really into port in the mid-late 90s, when I had a group I could share with. It's fun to open some of the bottles left over now that they have a bit of real age on them
