Dow’s Crusted Port, bottled in 2000:
Almost as dark as the 1988 Fonseca. Still very primary dark plums and mocha on a soft nose. The palate was also soft and it didn’t excite me right off the bat. Of course, coming on the heels of the ’88 Fonseca, I knew it was suffer a bit in that regard. None the less, it had better structure than most LBV’s. Lots of tannins and acidity will carry this for at least another 15-20 years and the young primary dark fruit will support all that too. I was taken by how sexy this was to drink and while not a blockbuster right now, I have no doubt this will gain some complexity as it ages. 90-91 points 12/27/08
