blind tasting on 12/26 at Roy's house (8 total wines)

1963 Cockburn Vintage Port

Bright red with some brick. Very nice, bright highlights.

The nose is slightly musty, but not unpleasant. There are floral notes like faint honeysuckle.

Soft and smooth in the mouth... very elegant. Unfortunately it is overpowered by the lingering effects of #5 (the '66 Kopke) and so I can't get much more out of it. It seems meek compared to #5, though it also seems like it would be very nice in other circumstances.

I thought this showed beautifully and actually liked it more than the Fonseca 1963 that we had beside it ... which is saying a ton, although I did not find that specific bottle to be typical of the F63.

The '63 Cockburn is a rock star and one almost never mentioned in this vintage for some reason. The last bottle of this I had in October would easily hold it's own against many of the top houses from this year. I'm glad it showed as well for you guys.

Yes, that bottle also showed very nicely Andy. I have rarely been disappointed by a Cockburn's from this vintage. Certainly holding up better than some others I can think of.
