2009 Port Gala
Friday, January 30th, Colheita tasting
Flight 2 - 1953 Royal Oporto, 1955 Burmester, 1957 Porto Rocha, 1963 Niepoort
1953 Royal Oporto Colheita
bottled in 2003
Deep tawny color that fades cleanly toward the edge of the glass, taking on an orange tone near the edge.
Puzzling scent of sneakers - Converse rubber? It's not a dirty/musty/foul odor, but it's certainly strange.
Sweet and buttery in the mouth, with lots of wood notes (mostly Oak).
Easily the best flavor of the flight - nay, the entire weekend - but dragged down by the nose. That smell never blew off, either, and while it wasn't completely obnoxious or unpleasant it was weird enough to prevent this from being my Wine of the Offline.
