1945 Sandeman Vintage Port

Sorry, did not take notes on this one either.
Nice color, a very touch cloudy, but not too distracting. The ’45 Sandeman is medium light body and typical Sandeman. A touch acidic and slightly dry with a simple sweet at times taste and good mouth feel. This ’45 would be mid pack for the vintage and a fine port by itself. 91 points.

Have you had other bottles of this VP, Moses? I used to have a small stash but drank most in the 1990s. My last bottle was shared at an offline in SF a few years ago, and it was stellar. Some had a hard time believing it could possibly have been 60 years old at the time. Provenance is everything. I have also had a couple of weaker showings from UK bottles that were both bought at auction.

Not sure if I have had this before. The bottle was imported from Northern UK over the winter along with 200-300 bottles of port. All of the bottles from this cellar have been great, so I venture to say this was a decent showing for this port... It's just that when you put this against a perfect '35 Taylor, most Ports are going to fall short. The '45 Sandeman is still an excellent Port that I recommend anyone trying if they have the chance.
We were going to open a '48 Grahams last night, but it was too late and did not think it was worth it for us to open such a bottle at 4:00 AM....

Funny thing, I was talking to George Sandeman about the '35 and '45 bottlings last Wed. and he was telling me about a recent bottle of the '45 he had. It sounded very similar to your description too Moses. I hope to try one again someday. Very fond memories of it. Agreed it is not a top '45 like the Croft, Taylor's or Graham's ... my three favorites, but it is still a beautiful and elegant youthful VP from best bottles.
