2007 Duorum Vintage Port (cask sample)

Day 1
Color: Another on the slightly bluer end of the purple spectrum, with a 3/16" fade at the rim.
Nose: Lilacs. Strong lilacs. Very mild alcohol, and a decent backbone of ripe purple and medium black fruits. Very pleasant... one could sit and just smell this Port for quite a long time.
Palate: Some floral/lilac notes, big tannins, and excellent acidity. The fruits range from fresh red to ripe purple. Medium full body weight and medium sweet.
Finish: Decent heat and good tannins, that same floral note again, and good fruit. Very long and even finish. Superb.

Initial score: 94-97 points. Not quite on par with the Vale do Meao, but close.

After tasting the first 9, I noted that this one had a strange looking bottle. It was shorter than most (though not as short as a Niepoort or Kopke) but with a standard shape. And it was rather light green, almost like a tawny bottle. Clearly a cask sample, as you wouldn't want to bottle VP in that kind of bottle for the long haul.

Day 2 & Day 3 - I didn't taste on day 2 or 3 due to prior commitments

Day 4
Color: Violet, with 1/4" fade. It's bluer and denser today.
Nose: Lilacs again, but not quite a strong as day 1. A little spirity, but not bad. Nice medium purple fruits.
Palate: Medium full body and medium sweet. Very rich flavors backed up by big tannins and good acidity. Big, round, purple and black fruits.
Finish: Strong grip, good fruits, and pleasant heat. Very long and even fade out.

Final score: 94-97 points.

Final comments: A splendid Port, well worthy of aging and hoarding. Lock the castle and post warning signs, "Here there be dragons," to keep the villagers away from your stash. I believe Roy said that Duorum is new this year, so hopefully he'll give us more information about them in his 2007 Vintage Port report in next month's newsletter. (hint, hint )
