2007 Offley Boa Vista Vintage Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

Drunk over 3 days from a bottle I brought back from Portugal last month. This has put on more weight in the past few days even though it was full bodied when I first pulled the cork. This had deceptively rounded soft fruit at first which slowly morphed into raw blackberries as this sat opened. The tannins are no stranger here and dry out the palate at the same time as the acidity starts to kick in as it attempts to balance out that youthful yet raw fruit. I really liked how the finish started out big then just subtly hung for what seemed like minutes. A very good job by the Offley crew!

Andy,

I am pleased this bottle showed well for you and that you had the opportuntiy to experience how nicely this has evolved in the past half year. I enjoyed trying it again with you at Offley last month and it is starting to really strut its stuff. An old school Offley.

This was only the second time I've had it, last month being the first, so I don't know how it was 6 months ago. I assume it was a bit rough around the edges back then from your comments?

Let's just say it was not showing nearly as well as the one we had last month, that is for sure.

So I haven't looked at my notes from the October trip since then....so I just now looked at what I scored this same bottle last month, in early October. Granted, it was only a short 2-3 minute evaluation of it, but I scored it "90-92+". I must admit I was amazed right now to see my two score were fairly consistent with each other. But i did like this better on day two and three, so that would account for the slight increase of one point.

When I tasted it, that is what I thought. The bottle had been open for just a few hours. Offley and Kopke I thought were similar in that respect.

You highlight what can be a potential pit fall when doing quick tastings of any wine. Sometimes you catch it at it's best right away and sometimes you don't. :scholar:

I would've thought Kopke and Offley didn't have the aging potential of the Croft or Fonseca based on that limited sample, but I guess one should not rush to judgement?

The general quality of 2007 Vintage is great. Take your pick... I'd go for the house style I Iike or the best deal that comes around.
