What is charme Bairrada? I assume a different wine than the other Charme?
https://www.niepoort-vinhos.com/en/wines/
CHARME BAIRRADA
The "Charme" from the Douro Valley tastes fantastic - so how about a "Charme" produced in the same way, but from a completely different terroir such as the Bairrada region with its cool climate, exceptional calcareous soils, and using old Baga vines?

Yes Andy, Niepoort has a few wines like this that they have produced in small quantities but do not have yet a name or label. I know they have from Alentejo, Bairrada and Dao. They all have their code name when you taste them :) Some Dirk says he'll never release because it is too good! you know ;)

I opened one bottle last week, I prefered Poerinho Garrafeira to Charme.

Yes, probably a lagar or barrel that was showing something different or special.

Would love to try that one! Bairrada wine are fun. I doubt it'll ever make it here. Niepoort has awful distribution in MA. Was decent in the 1990's

It is not new or surprising for Niepoort. They did a Sempar in Douro, Bairrada and now Alentejo. I used to be able to keep up with everything now I can't anymore ahah

Eric - If you have not figured it out already, you purchased a fifteen-year-old blend, bottled in the 1990s; that is, after 1994, when Quinta do Barao was bringing its operations to a close. The farm and its manor house, which now belongs to the municipality of Cascais, has been abandoned for twenty years or thereabouts. A proposal from fifteen years ago to turn the property into a museum came to nought; the current thinking, such as it is, extends to the turning of the large house into student accommodation.

I think that they are really dialing in the style and not making it so "in your face". Starting with the 2014 I could really see a change. Not a huge change, but more balanced and not as HUGELY oaky. I'm only buying a six each year.

J.M.S. Moscatel de Setúbal Superior 1998
2012 Viúva Gomes Colares DOC Vinho Tinto
1969 Viúva Gomes Colares DOC Vinho Tinto

I opened the first two and posted tasting notes. The third I'll save for a rainy day.

Picked up a 1997 and 2000 Herdade do Mouchao in Lisbon.
Also tasted and bought a 30 year old Carcavelos from a Quinta do Barao, apparently from an old cask.
Got a 30 year old JM Fonseca Bastardhinho as well.

They were telling me about that Carcavelos at GN. How was it? Since you bought some I presume you thought it worth the price.

I thought it pretty good. Better than the Bella Vista I got a few years ago.
To me, worth the price given the extreme rarity of aged Carcavelos these days. There's only 4 or so hectares in the entire appellation!
I'll post a note.
This was 99 euros. There were two other bottlings, one 185 euros and one 299 euros. They really didn't know much about them, and I would be hesitant to purchase without tasting. I did apply for the VAT refund.

Acker Auction

2016 Niepoort Batuta 12 - $27 each
2017 Niepoort Batuta 12 - $27 each
2007 Niepoort Vintage Port 6 - $37.35

Got lucky with this auction. Low reserve and no bidders. They still have 1 of each year of 12 Batutas
