2005 Niepoort LBV Port

These notes were taken after approximately 20 hrs decant time:

This one definitely warranted the long decant time, it's really opened up since sipping it last night. It started out deep and rather brooding, but is now more generous, with sweet raspberry, eucalyptus and a fragrant earthiness like fresh coffee grounds on the nose - very inviting. Sweet, medium weight black raspberry and black cherry fruit on the palate, very smooth, with a dose of black pepper on the back of the tongue, followed by a refreshing, almost lemony acidity that for me seems to be a trademark of all of the Niepoort VPs and LBVs that I've sampled. The tannic structure is firm but definitely approachable.

Delicious. Excellent LBV from one of my favorite houses. I think I'll pick up a couple more of these and give them a few years in the cellar to see how they develop, but this is drinking pretty well right now. 91/92pts

Great to hear the early view on this and thanks for taking one for the team. Considering how much Dirk is fond of his 2005 VP, I am not surprised this is also a very fine Port. I have not seen this in the market, but then again ... I have not even looked.

I haven't seen this in the market yet, so your early review is much appreciated. I loved the 2003 LBV and bought a number of them for the crazy cheap price of $14 (which of all people my non-port drinking brother found near him and called to tell me about). So to read the 2005 was this good is great to hear. I'll keep my eye out for it
