Will this ultimately replace the cork as the wine closure of the future?

Not for Port in the immediate future, if ever.
1. The seal material is still that plastic stuff used with screw caps. So it isn't going to let oxygen in. The article mentioned a different seal material that is more permeable, but I think the jury is still out on that.
2. Right now, that seal material is "GK 20558 – clear PVC-material on the basis of K1/1
This material is used as a standard material for non alcoholic and alcoholic beverages (up to 15% ABV)."
I see it making inroads into the screw-caps/Stelvin market, however.

I would think that a knock on the side of the neck could dislodge one of these, just as a knock on top of the neck can damage a screw-cap. The difference would be that dislodging the glass-cap might not be visible, unlike a ding in a screw cap. Pretty sad to open the capsule and discover that the glass-cap hadn't been sealing properly for some unknown number of years.

It would be cool to try some on a 2007 and see how it fares down the road.
