Re: Vintage maturing in a warmer cellar

Agree with the above, subject to the below. What I've been told by producers is that the actual temperature is not as important as the regular temperature swing. Storing Port at - for example - 70 degrees F is fine as long as it stays within a degree or two of that temp all day every day. If you hav...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Just ordered my first batch of 2021 Graham's The Stone Terraces. 6 bottles on pre-order. They won't arrive (in London) until September. Did you find these on a site like wine-searcher? Curious as to how you/others source young/brand new vintages. Yep, winesearcher.com. It's my most-used method for ...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

My daughter recently got engaged and the bloke was born in 1989...what a challenge to find Ports in that year! But I did! 3 x 1989 Kopke Colheitas. Note: She was born in 1993 so this couple clearly has a birthyear Port problem---(I adopted 1994 for her years AGO.) You can also use 1991s which were ...

Re: 1863 Taylor Fladgate....how long to hold?

Regarding the rate of loss in a barrel over time... I'm going to be a bit vague about this for now because I cannot remember if the producer wants the specifics of this discussed in public. If Stewart or Roy gives the okay, I'll come back and fill in further details later. But the relevant parts... ...

Re: What have you opened this week?

1985 Niepoort. The hardest cork I've ever extracted. It felt like it was superglued to the sides of the bottle. The cork was thoroughly soaked through but eventually came out in one piece. Alas, the bottle ended up being riddled with TCA. This is the second bottle of a six bottle lot purchased at a...

Re: What have you opened this week?

1994 Vesuvio VP These are fabulous, but have some of the worst corks that I've ever seen consistently in a given Port. I only occasionally open a bottle that has a solid cork... most of them require a Durand, which is not something that should be needed in a 30-year old Port. They crumble to sawdust...

Re: Port Vintages, Second Edition

It stopped listing vintages around 2000 (I may be off by a bit) as those are now easily referenced via internet. Which is why you won’t see newer ports listed. IIRC detailed notes stop with the formation of the EU, so 1986. "Other vintages" then go on to something like 2000 as you said.

Re: Van Zellers & Co Port Aged Underwater

I dunno. Jefferson's Ocean bourbon has a very distinct character and those voyages are only about a year, as I recall. But isn't that bouncing around the surface of the sea, subject to daily temperature fluctuations and shaking? That's a lot different than next to Davy Jones's locker. I don't know ...

Re: Durand-style Openers

I have a Durand but don't use it all that often. I'm very successful just using normal corkscrews most of the time. I probably would use my Durand more if it had a slightly longer worm. The retail version's worm is just a normal corkscrew length, and it seems that Port bottles often have longer cork...

Re: Van Zellers & Co Port Aged Underwater

They are teasing being the first VP to be aged underwater, per their Instagram. Very little details, but more to be released soon. 400 years later, we are doing something new. The first Vintage Port that has been aged underwater. All will be revealed on International Ocean's Day, June 8th. Ready to...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

1964 Justino's Boal How is it? It was good, but I think it was also harmed by following a whole bunch of old tawny Port (and also dessert). Boal just doesn't have the sugar to follow tawnies and desserts, at least not for me. Given that a third of the bottle was left in the decanter after 10 people...

Re: Fun Port Quiz for the Opinionated

It's weird how old LBVs don't seem to show up at auction much. I would think that because they were produced in greater volumes, we would see more of them but they seem almost rarer than the VPs. I suspect that's because LBVs are generally considered "ready to drink" when they're produced...
