1937 Moreira Colheita Port

I had this port last month, here are my notes: Medium to deep garnet-orange with an orange amber rim with good clarity although there was some particulate matter. Fragrant of alcohol, cane sugar, marzipan, and toffee with a hint of acetone at the edges. Light in sweetness and acidity, this was a ple...

Mike, I had this wine about a year ago and it was from the same year of bottling. I have had the '37, '38, '41, '50, '52, '57, '63, '64, '65, and '66, and this particular colheita, the '57 was my least favorite. Some of the older colheitas are pretty good, and have a decent QPR. But this particular ...

TN: Offley White Port

Mike, I tried this one in '04 here is my tasting note: Offley White Port Straw yellow in color with a lemon yellow rim and great clarity. The wine is quite fragrant with honeydew mellon, strawberry and raspberry fragrances with hints of apricot. Very acidic and sweet, and would be cloying after more...

Thanks Mario, I will send him a note tomorrow. I really appreciate the tip, they are tough to find wines here in the U.S.

1970 Krohn Vintage

Suckling gave this wine a 74 when drinking it at its prime, I had this wine a little over a year ago on Thanksgiving. It will never live up to the Taylor but I still found it an interesting if average quality wine. Here were my tasting notes: Krohn 1970 Vintage Port Medium rose in color with a light...

Richard, I envy you, this is a great port, I had it myself Christmas Eve a year ago and I will never forget it. I started drinking after 5 hours decanting, but it got better and better as the hours went by, although I can't be sure hours (plural) is appropriate, it may not have lasted quite that lon...

New Year's Port

Richard, best of luck with the '77 Graham's, I just had this on Christmas Eve and I would have to agree with Roy if he finds this wine flawed, this was a bit of a disappointment. I had the 1963 Graham's the previous Christmas and was hoping for a similar experience, regretfully the '77 doesn't even ...

Christmas Day Drinking

For me it was a bottle of '77 Grahams that I had noticed had just started to leak, glad I did too, as its tannins were fully resolved and smooth. My family also enjoyed a Gilbert's 1940 Colheita that was supposed to have been consumed on my Father's birthday in mid-December but for one reason or ano...

Another White Port

Although I, too, love the Churchill's Dry White Port, I can also recommend the Quinta do Infantado Dry White Port. It is certainly more sweet than the Churchill's, but an excellent white port if you can find it.

Cloudy Colheitas

Derek, It is quite common for colheitas to have some sediment, especially those that have been sitting in the bottle for a number of years. Some are even bottled that way to "enhance" the flavor. Often times, the sediment in colheitas is very fine indeed and can take much more that a few d...

I had the 1980 Roeda recently (in May) and here are my notes: Croft Quinta da Roeda 1980 Vintage Port Medium red in color with an amber-rose rim and good clarity. I have had their 10 year old tawny and it was one of the best I have had, only eclipsed by Niepoort's, but barely so. On the other hand, I have also had their Ruby Reserve which was only average.

I would love to find a 1937 Burmester Colheita, I will look around next time I get out to the bay area. Wine-Searcher and the odd auction house has been the best way for me to find Burmester ports. I have enjoyed those that I have found and will keep my eyes open to see if they start showing up in t...

I haven't had a lot of 1980 Vintage Ports as yet, but there is one special one I would like to note. It is the Gould Campbell 1980, this was my first wonderfully elegant vintage port and it got me hooked. Before that I was a colheita man, most of the vintages that I had had were either past their pr...
