Yup! Just check out the associated dangers. Sorry - couldn't resist...

Re: LBV: Does anyone disagree?

I had this same experience with a 2003 Taylor LBV. Just after popping the cork, it was very sweet and lacked any depth. I had a glass or two over the course of 2-3 hours and was not impressed. I recorked the bottle, put in in the fridge and came back the next day. I poured another glass and let it s...

Re: Importance of Storage

Hey Nick! Welcome aboard from a fellow dweller in the gov't controlled of PA! There are a few places that will ship to PA, but they seem to be very limited. As I find a few sources, I'll share them with you. My collection of port is rather modest as well. I suspect it'll grow over the coming years.....

Re: Inquiry about bottle condition

The curious side of me decided to keep this bottle of 63 Dow to open and share with friends for New Year's Eve rather than return it due to the difference in reported vs actual ullage (I did bring a back up bottle, though, in the event that this one was dead). We opened it about 5:30p and strained i...

That's exactly the one, Eric. For $30, I thought it was a great deal.

Houdini glassware on sale at Kohls stores

Hi Everyone, Just a quick head's up. I was shopping at Kohls today and found a 50-ounce ship's decanter/captain's decanter. Its normally priced at $60, but its currently on sale for only $30. I can't find the item on their web page, but found it in the store. It even comes with a metal mesh strainer...

Re: Buying Op for later this year

Eric, The newsletter that is sent out to all registered recipients comes by email. The subscribers are the only ones that get to see the exact wines offered and that is in the full access .pdf newsletter that you are not able to see. These buying opportunities are typically not why people subscribe...

Re: Buying Op for later this year

Hi Roy,

I'm curious about the purchase opportunity and I received the e-mail message, but when I got to the home page for the news letter, its linked to the Sept issue. Where can I find the Dec newsletter with the wines included in the current purchase opportunity?

Thanks,
Eric

Re: fine cheese

Great thread! I've been meaning to ask about this as well. I tried Stilton cheese with the last bottle of port I opened (which was waaaaaay too long ago) and found it not to be to my liking. I had several types of cheese and crackers, a good crab dip recipe, and a few other odds and ends. In the end...

Re: $250 to spend on Port wine

I would buy a 2007 Dow, a 2000 Grahams (both high on respective wines of the year lists) I just picked up a 2000 Grahams over Thanksgiving weekend from a place by my in-laws house. Still a bit of a strange feeling to know that something you just bought will take another 20+ years before its ready t...

Re: Inquiry about bottle condition

Thanks, Roy! That collection of images was very helpful! (not to mention impressive! [shok.gif] ) Not one discolored Selo in the bunch. I suppose I should be more choosy. I've seen a number of bottles (online) marked as "signs of seepage" or "signs of past seepage." From your exp...

Re: Inquiry about bottle condition

As important as having a fine bottle, is the decanting and serving of port; there’s a thread right there. I would not want muck that part up especially when you have a dream bottle like ’63 Dow. Fortunately, I've come across a number of threads right here that provide some great insights to help me...

Re: Lots of new faces ... please introduce yourself

By chance do you remember what your first bottle of Port was that hooked you? Sadly, I don't remember all of the specifics. For some reason, I'm remembering a date from the middle 1980's, but I can't remember the specific house. I'm wishing I'd paid more attention now... I just remember that is was...

Re: Inquiry about bottle condition

Eric, Andy, and Roy: Thanks for the feedback on the condition of the bottle. I suppose the color of the Selo does cause some concern, but this is offset to some degree given the high fill level of the bottle. Looking around a little more online, I have found a number of other '63 Dows for sale at th...

Hi Everyone, I'm Eric and [imnewhere.gif] . I'm a university professor :scholar: and I was first introduced to Vintage Port wine about 10 years ago at a professional conference by some of my colleagues from other countries. It was an amazing experience compared to any other drink I had ever had up t...

Re: Inquiry about bottle condition

...if you only want to be able to drink, say, 6 bottles a year then you'd need 180 bottles (6 per year x 30 years) to be able to support your drinking habit. Sure :D Go ahead and use logic... OK, perhaps I was underestimating a little bit  But you make it sound dirty with the phrase "dri...

Re: Appropriate Decanter Size

Ok, I think I'm beginning to understand... Is it better, then, to use a ship's decanter (lots of surface area exposure) for the younger wines that need to be decanted for longer periods of time and use a more narrow decanter for the older wines that don't need to be decanted for as long?

Appropriate Decanter Size

I'm looking into buying a decanter and am finding a variety of sizes from 24oz to 40oz to 70-80oz. Which size is most appropriate for decanting 750ml bottles? I presume that when the full bottle is poured into the decanter, you want the level of wine to come to the mid point of the widest part of th...

Re: Inquiry about bottle condition

Do you have a basement? Put the bottles in their cases stacked on the cool side of the basement and that should work fine for you. Port is a robust wine. Yep, 2/3 of the basement is finished (heated and air conditioned with forced air). The remaining 1/3 of the basement is concrete block wall and t...
