Re: PORT BASICS: Why do you drink Port?
For several reasons: - tasty - great to share with friends - it's from my home country :) - and it has a lot of "intangible" value. For those who know the Douro, producing such a fine wine there is something amazing... when you think on all the labour that goes into each grape! Also you're...

Re: What have you opened this week?
On saturdat the 31st, one bottle of Barros Colheita 1968. That's curious Roy, we're many thousands ok km away, and on the same day opening and drinking old colheitas from the same year. I Would've liked to have those two bottles to taste also lol. My Colheita was very nice indeed, only needed some m...

Re: What Port are you opening up on Christmas eve/day?
For Christmas, finish off the Kopke 1994 colheita and maybe open a 79 colheita. For new year's eve, i'll open a Barros colheita 1968 and also a bottle of 1912 Madeira Wine, from Companhia Exportadora da Madeira. Roy, can you advise me how many hours to decant this one? Bottle shows little sediment, ...

Re: How many total bottles of Port do you own?
Under 50 because of bottles already kept aside for Christmas and New Year's Eve, and also because some of them are going to be Christmas gifts.
Mental note: "stop giving away Port for Christmas" :)

Kopke colheita 1979 and kopke colheita 1994.
The 94 is superb for it's age, if they keep some in barrels for another 40 or 50 years i can't imagine how good it can turn up to be

Re: BIG & BREAKING NEWS: IVDP - VIOLENCE IN THE DOURO - BENEFICIO
People are often afraid of what they don't know or understand. It was very much so in the middle ages, when everything that happened and could not be explained was atribbuted to Gods, witches or the Devil. Science and progress took care of solving many misteries, opening new worlds to the world, as ...

Re: Visiting the Douro, what's holding you back from going or going again?
Well, i'm in a bit of advantage because i'm one hour drive from Douro :). What i can say to everybody is that is relatively easy to find accomodation in the north of Portugal, Oporto and Douro. Driving and sightseeing is also easy and you have a lot more to see than just wine and quintas. So it can ...

Re: Do you occasionally sell some of your Ports?
Well, there has to be a materialistic guy in this post, so i'm problably the one :D Altough i've only a few bottles in my collection, i sold a few colheitas with some profit. But i regard these as means to gather and invest more cash in good opportunities, them sell some more bottles and steadily gr...

Re: How long do feel Port lasts once opened?
My last bottle was a Burmester 30 y old tawny that lasted about 6 weeks, kept in the fridge.
I drank in the first 3 weekends and then in the last one.
First sips very nice, quality more or less unchanged for the first 2 weeks.
In the end was still enjoyable, but had lost some "edge".

Yes, Calem won with Graham's posting a not far second place...
Some boats ran ashore into Gaia because of currents and strong winds.
It's quite a sight this "regata", makes you go back in time!

Re: Eating with Port
A friend recommended me to try a strong dish, like roasted goatlind or roasted meat, with delicious potatoes and a 1994 vintage (Quinta do Estanho). Half the bottle with the main course... and the other half with the dessert (Portuguese Queijo da Serra - Cheese) or quality dark chocolate. Now it's s...
