Rare Wine Company--John Gilman Note on D'O's Malvazia 1990

Post by John Trombley »

I got an email from Rare Wine Company on an email-only offer for D'Olivera's Malvazia 1990, quoting a Gilman 94-point review of that wine. There has been some confusion over whether the wine he reviewed s a Vintage or a Colhieta, but I don't have access to the subscription website. Does anyone know what Herr G. actually reviewed, and what is actually on offer? RWC claims it's the VIntage.

Here's a nubbin of what's in the email offer from RWC:

1990 D’Oliveira Malvasia
$89.95 btl
John Gilman 94
“ … spectacular, soaring from the glass in an aromatic constellation of cloves, brown sugar, cherries, oranges, honey cake and a lovely base of salty soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and brilliantly focused and balanced, with lovely filigree of sweetness, soil and acidity, and a finish that just goes on and on and on! A brilliant wine … Drink between 2014-2100.”

It's an excellent tipple... I gave it a 92 then tracked down a few bottles through a different shipper. It's tremendously deep, with hints of cinnamon. Better than the 1989 IMHO... Do not pop and pour, give at least a week to decant, you won't be sorry. [cheers.gif]

Of course the question is whether this is a 20 year or a 7 plus year old wine. It of course could be 20 years old, having been bottled after 2010.

Glad it was soo good. I'm thinking of buying....

I'll double-check the label tonight, but recall it spending 20 years in oak before being bottled.

John,
you could call the RWC and ask. They're usually pretty good about that sort of thing. Bottling dates are now mandatory on vintage and Colheita Madeiras.
