Buying and selling port-related items on ebay

Post by Phil W »

I scan ebay (UK) occasionally for VP and usually come across many items for sale such as empty vintage port wooden cases for around £15 each, single panels from such cases for £5 each, empty vintage port bottles for £5 each or labels for £2-3 (all + shipping ofc). This seems crazy to me; I can't believe they can sell many of these items individually and at such prices (except perhaps the empty bottles to some poor sod who thinks it's full) - am I wrong?

Some people like to use the cases and panels for decoration, a friend of mine paneled a cellar wall with them and had to round up some from other sources to get enough (though he didn't buy them). The bottles and labels always worry me, as that always seems like an invitation to a forger to take a go.

We are using case ends as the risers on a stair case down to our cellar. Most likely will have to buy a few to complete the project.

You'll have to share pictures when you're done! They can look super cool when integrated into a space.

I've seen OWCs listed on local craiglist as well, typically around $20 each. That seems expensive to me for such a thing given the ones I've gotten with wine, but apparently there is a market. And I've saved some of mine as well, and expect if I ever do something with them, I'll end up buying some more depending on the size of the project.
