Need recommendations for a low alc% Port

Post by silo »

Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a port that's lower on the alc%? I definetly like my wine sweeter, but since i dont really have a good alc. tolerance, i was wondering if anyone could recommend any Ports that are a bit lighter. the lighter the better :)

hope to hear from you soon

I don't know any red port that goes below 19%alc/vol.

The other option is to take a white Port. Some dry white port have around 17% of alcool. But I'd not recommend it because I don't like dry white Port.

So my best recommendation, even though the stuff is less good than Port for my palate would be to go with another fortified wine like Banyuls or Sherry that are closer to 15%. A Banyuls vintage is really good and it has a taste close to a LBV.

Bob,

I don't have a high alcohol tolerance so I tend to drink quite slowly. It will often take me 3-4 days to drink my way through a bottle of port.

Elsewhere on the site, you can find lots of hints as to how to keep the port fresh over this time.

But I don't think you will be able to find port less than 19% alcohol as that is a feature of the fortification process.

Alex,

I'm not convinced by your protestations. I don't remember your glasses having only half an inch in each, I'm sure somebody would have spotted.

Silo,

Get Port, drink it and build up your tolerance. It doesn't take long and there are support groups to help, you're posting on one, the Automobile Association is another.

OK, proper help, forget low alcohol anything, drink less and learn to double-decant: decant then pour back wine that don't intend to drink into gradually smaller and smaller bottles, leaving as little air-space to the cork as possible. VP disintegrates pretty quickly so you may even want to start with half-bottles but don't tell Roy as he has a thing about halves.

Alex
I'm telling you - Port is from Portugal.
