Re: How many bottles of Port do you own today?
Interesting question. I had to go to my Excel list, scroll down and enter the numbers in a separate column. Using the miracle of the "Sum" function I arrived at a total of 85 bottles of what may be called Port. There are 62 bottles of what most of us would call real Port (or the only Port), VPs, SQVPs, and LBVs.
The other 23 bottles are "ports" from Australia, South Africa, California and the Crimea, VPs, LBVs and a Colheita. I'm only counting the bottles that use the word "Port" on the bottles, not fortified dessert wines like Maury and Banyuls.
Cheers..............Mahmoud.

Callar tracker says 500... but I know that I have more than that. And there is still more coming from the UK. So let's say conservatively 650 (approx 55 cases). Almost all of that is VP. I have maybe 6 bottles of Tawny and a case and a half of LBV.

Thought i had posted this last week - but at any rate...
Today I own 9 bottles of port. I started collecting when i visited Portugal in Sept. '06. I brought home one 2003 Croft. Since then I have collected 7 VP's (3 others from '03, 2 '94's a 1991 and recently consumed 1985 Smith Woodhouse which was delicious) 1 reserve ruby and I just bought a 1986 Colheita. I have recently been enjoying the '03 LBV's - have worked my way through 3 of them. Truthfully the plan is only to own in the neighbourhood of 40 or 50 VP's - once I have enough each year it will be a few in and a few out.

I am slowly building up my collection by watching for bargains. I'm not a millionaire, but I'm hoping to retire as one with a well stocked cellarJohn B. wrote:So I'm not the only one on this site who isn't a millionaire???

Re: How many bottles of Port do you own today?
Nice discussion!
Well, I'm impressed with the serious and considerable investments that many Port fanatics have been doing!
Keep up the spirit!
I've bought my first "bottle matured Port" for my "cellar" when I turned 14 and I sold as well, my first bottle ever to a Canadian. That was probably one of the best moments of my life, specially because most of what I knew about VP I learned with the first book that I ever read with pleasure - The Port Companion by Godfrey Spence.
It was a Warre's 83.
The Canadian took 1 bottle because he wanted to honor me as it was my very 1st sale of Port and he bought a VP from my year of birth and then I also bought another for me at Vinologia ... it was my very first passion!
I've then started to buy many others, not as many as I wished, but I've offered my Warre's 83 when I graduated in 2007 to my University teachers and my tutors of Microsoft where I made my internship and completed the degree. I've felt that I need to show them how Port is important, special... everything for me and that 6 years learning IT it was just some important knowledge but no passion at all for me.
Well, so far, I count 62 bottle mature Ports of my private cellar. I would love to have some more, but fortunately I can taste Port and VP everyday... it's the best thing I could ever imagine for my life! The Port that I've more bottles is my very favorite 2005 Vesuvio - 7 bottles (I've already opened 5!!) but this week I'm going to make the ultimate attack and loose my mind buying 12 more bottles!Oouch, it will hurt but when I see those babies in my bedroom together with all the other 62...I will be a proud father!
Other Ports: at least seven VP 83, many 2000 including my loyal Graham's, some rare old collection bottles (Ferrari collection Ports, some 81 VP Quinta do Infantado, 93 VP Quinta das Liceiras among many others) and many unfiltered LBVs.
Ah, also 3 bottles of Quinta da Romaneira over 40y, other 3 of Dalva 52 and some other Colheitas from Romaneira.

Gustavo,
It really is great to have you back visiting us again. I enjoyed reading the story of the 1983 Warre's and your collection.
I am very much looking forward to seeing you in about a month from now!

Re: How many bottles of Port do you own today?
While the number fluctuates between 50-60, I currently have 50 in the wine fridge and one open bottle of Barros 1988 colheita. I started collecting Port in 2005 after a trip to Portugal.
It is somewhat difficult to have Port shipped into Maryland, so I am constantly scouring local stores.
Most are vintages with a few colheitas and LBVs mixed in. While I promised myself that I would drink more and buy less, I am replacing as I consume. But, the collection has not significantly changed in the last 6 months.

I think I am somewhere between 150-250 bottles? I don't like to keep an acurate count, but it is on my "to do's" for this spring.

Re: How many bottles of Port do you own today?
So I have been drinking WAY more than buying over the last year or two. I also consigned a good couple few cases of VP to my new Wine Bar this last year as well. So i am likely in the 150'ish plus range or so. Oh wait, with Broadbents & the other recent FTLOP offering order still yet to ship, I have about 250 bottles or so. Yeah :!:

Re: How many bottles of Port do you own today?
I have not done an accurate count for a while. I have been eying a proper Wine Fridge so that I can keep the majority of my collection at proper temperature and humidity because at the moment, my "cellar" consists of a stack of bottles laying on their sides on the floor of my basement. It is relatively consistent temperature, despite fluctuations in seasons, yet the humidity is FAR too low.
That being said, My task for this very weekend was to re-shuffle and inventory the bottles that are there so I can justify the cost of this wine fridge. I need to keep some of these babies for many years (for the kids) and proper storage will ensure drinkability for years to come, both for me and them.)
I would estimate my collection to be just over 100 bottles, perhaps 110. Most are VP or SQVP, with a couple of special aged tawnies and colheitas. A few are LBVs that I am trying to experiment with some extended bottle age (most unfiltered, but there are one or two filtered LBVs for some real fun experimentation in 5-10 yrs from now.)
I will return to this thread once I have the inventory in hand. Perhaps this is the time to start a proper Cellar Tracker account and track for good? <sigh> Then I will find out how much I spend on this crazy habit and I might be scared. :)

I assure you you are not. I can't really afford thi habit, but like some of the others indicated: you start with small ambitions and get fully immersed. Next thing you know... BMA. Down the slippery slope you speed and you have 100+ bottles of Port in your cellar.

Yes, and don't ask me when I expect to retire. Long ago I was projecting early retirement. I don't want to run the numbers now given the state of my investments. I may be working for a long time. If that's the case, all the more reason to have some Port on hand.

I have 76 bottles; 3 are 500ml. The oldest is 1884, the youngest is 2000. 7 bottles are harvest/colheita. 8 bottles are not vintage-dated: Barbeito reserve terrantez, H&H Inauguration, RWC New Orleans, and RWC Wanderer.
I guess I need to start a new thread on the Madeira forum.
