1963 Sandeman Vintage Port

Post by Philippe Borel »

63 Sandeman on Monday. Great year, uneven bottles from Sandeman. This one was the last of a case purchased in the early nineties.
Terrible nose: steamed vegetables that never went away in spite of decanting and airing. The wine did not seem affected. Tight, still fresh and vibrant.
Good balance, lingering finish. Once upon a time a great bottle..... maybe.
Last night, warm-up for today's main event a magnum of Taylor 60. High shoulder, wisely used port tongs to avoid wrestling with the cork.
Lovely wine, elegant, subtle palette of flavours. A feminine wine, a 'luncheon port'. Wilting flower....

Re: Not great but interesting

I had thought that the 1963 Sandeman's were all over the hill. Then I had two consecutive great bottles, the first in the UK in 2009 and then another one in May 2010 at Seixo. Both showed quite a bit younger than my past half dozen bottles. which were basically delicious tawnies.
