FTLOP Tasting: Pre-2000 LBV's - UPDATED: 4/1/14

I think it would be fun to break out some older bottles of LBV Ports and taste them blind over the course of a couple of sessions, the weekend of April 26th. I'll put in a few from my cellar, pay for the venue's room charge and we'll supply all of the glassware etc. You need to just be ready, willing and able to join in the fun and bring one worthy LBV, (or more if you'd like) that fits the theme. Limited to a total of 14 individuals, so pours will be worthwhile. If we only wind up with 8 or 10 participants, we will still proceed, but likely only would do one session instead. Open to suggestions, but firm on 1999 and older bottlings.

Good to see that this might be something people feel is worth traveling for. If we have enough people and bottles we can always extend the theme and number of tastings. Maybe if there's interest we could do one night of Douro wines? But I don't want to jump too far ahead. For now, let's just wing it and see what sticks.

I've added a few LBV's that I know are in my cellar, but will give a good look around after the holidays. I'll update at least every few days.

I'll also be hunting, and will update when I've acquired them. Unlike many of our tastings, it seems that a good search will be more store, rather than aftermarket, focused. Makes the wine-searcher subscription worth it!

So, it appears that an Issaquah merchant (perhaps one without a store?) is carrying an '84 Smith-Woodhouse LBV for ~$38. I dug them up on wine-seacher, and was curious:

A) Have the Seattle area folks heard of this outfit?

B)If they're reputable, would someone be willing to either pick up the bottle if I purchase it, or be interested in picking it up themselves as a contribution? I have other interesting options brewing, so I'm not stuck on grabbing this bottle myself, but I'd love to see it at the tasting and would buy it if no one else was interested.

I'd be happy to do either. I've never heard of them, but that's not unusual for Issaquah. Despite being 10 minutes away, I rarely go there.

I heard back from the President of WinesThatWork and am arranging to purchase some of the SW84. Their warehouse is in Fall City so I can just pick it up to save shipping.

Brad since you found it the option is still yours. I can bring you a bottle (or more) in L.A. if you'd like.

I think I'm going to be able to pick up a couple older Niepoort LBVs when I go home in a couple weeks, so have at it! Like I said, I just wanted to make sure it showed up.

That was my impression, but I haven't received confirmation. I've ordered 6 if they have them.
