The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD

That was crazy, but we'll have some pretty remarkable bottlings in Madeira, that's for sure.

Re: The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD
Roy,
As a newcomer to your forums, I must applaud you for your efforts to be one of the catalysts for organizing the Transcendental Terrantez Tasting. I had the pleasure of drinking with Bob Maliner in Florida and Mannie Berk in Connecticut only days after this tasting, and both of them talked about it at length. What a special night that must have been! I'm sure the establishment had to literally kick you guys out, since I can only imagine the camaraderie that exuded from the room (not to mention the wafts of madeira) prevented any of you from ever wanting to leave.
I am an avid madeira drinker (and collector, of course), yet I admit that I shall forever be learning something new with each madeira pour and taste. (especially with generous, honorable, and knowledgable folks like Bob and Mannie to help me along) This forum, no doubt, will take up much of my time in the future.
Living in Los Angeles, and working in the industry that I do, I would love to try and film a documentary around this wonderful elixir, and perhaps intercut moments from these monumental tastings during the more 'historical' parts filmed in Madeira.
Which brings me to this question... did anyone happen to be FILMING even the tiniest bit during your Transcendental Tasting? Tastings like that (and those like it in the future!) should be documented thoroughly! (Even if the video would ultimately only end up making everyone else on Earth insanely jealous...)
Best,
Mark

Mark,
did you get my PM? My brother took a lot of semi-professional adio/video at the TTT and he will be happy to share it with you.

Hi Peter,
Yes, I received your PM and Hans and I have gone back and forth via email a couple times. Thank you very much! I thought I had replied to your PM, but I may be mistaken especially given that I am very new to this site. I'm checking now, and it looks like there is a message from me to you in my outbox. I'll try to send again.
Thanks for PMing me, and I look forward to seeing Hans' footage!
Best,
Mark

Wow, this looks great .. If we can see "live" from the most exciting day in my life...

Re: The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD
Hi Mark,
Thanks for such kind and encouraging words. I wish I had known of your interest in Madeira sooner, as we have two openings for this year's tour and it would have been amazing to have this filmed, as we are going to be doing some fairly impressive visits and enjoying some stellar bottlings. Unfortunately, our tour is only a few weeks away.
As to TTT it was fantastic due to the people who shared in the experience and the history of the bottlings, some of which, we'll likely never get to try again.
Drinking with Bob and Mannie, it doesn't get much better than that. I started Madeira with Bob back in the mid-1990's and have continued to grow and learn and visit the island many times now. It is an incredible place, similar in many ways to Hawaii and equally beautiful with bananas instead of pineapples, flowers the #1 export and the wine produced in Madeira is well, a little better than what is produced in Hawaii nowadays.
I hope to see you posting on the bottles you are experiencing and look forward to share some great Madeira with you at some point in the future!

Hi Mark,
I am just curious about your "Madeira-Movie" project, any news on this? I would love to see an edited movie about this epic event.
Best,
Peter

Re: The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD
Hey Peter!
Well, as with any project, it really first comes down to content. And with a project like this, I'm going to need to collect tens though more likely hundreds of hours of footage before piecing together an entire feature length film (~70-90 minutes). I will likely have to go on a few Madeira tours with Roy (poor me!) as well as take a few trips to madeira independently and get some good one-on-one interviews in closed environments. (Bring sound, lighting equipment, etc) Then comes the photographing of historical documents, photos, ledgers, etc. And also I'll likely have to travel to a few madeira tasting EVENTS where the viewer can get a glimpse of the madeira fans, and how they come from all over the world for "a taste of history."
It'll be a long process, indeed, although fairly constant throughout. Then comes the concept of how to finance such a project
Kickstarter, perhaps? Films I tend to make are scripted and with crews of 70-100 people and 3-6 months of post-production... so in fact this project is actually unique for me.
I'll keep you posted, my fellow madeira drinkers! Meanwhile, if there are any events (like perhaps the one in SF in December?) that I should know about, please let me know!)
Cheers,
Mark

Re: The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD
And the silence was deafening......
I loved the post.
I loved it because it was refreshing.
I loved it because it took me away from the sooooo serious assesment of the 68 D'oliveira Bual or the Blandy's 76 Terrantez.
So amaizingly boring.
It took me away from the TTT notes with the smugness of the enlightened ones that took part; 'The greatest day of my life'.....
Of course the shoot will never take place and will go down with the long list of projects that have gone down
with the kiss of death statement ' pending financing'
But it was a fun read. God bless the dreamers!

Re: The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD
Sometimes one really get suprised...Last Thursday me and wife flew to NYC for a weekendtrip to see Evita and good food. Flew home yesterday.
Just after takeoff from Oslo I walked down to the toilet. A guy stopped me and said :"Are you Reidar?". I said , yes, and then the suprise. He had seen my pictures on TTTT, and he was on the way to a winetasting in Fort Lauderdale, Winewatch I think.. A Norwegian guy with same interest as us here in this forum...![RUkidding? Re: The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD
I was actually planning on going to that wine tasting (they were featuring several madeira, but I was feeling the gravitational pull of the 1802 Oscar Acciaioly specifically).... however, last minute work changes prevented me from traveling all the way there from Los Angeles. I went last year, and it was an intimate affair with some great madeira. It was from Bob Maliner that I first heard of the TTT (before I started poking around this website/forum); he had more or less just attended the TTT event and he raved about it. If only I had signed on to this website a year earlier!
Small world! (and thanks to the internet, ever growing smaller!)
Hope you had a great trip!

Re: The Great Terrantez Tasting -- time/place TBD
I was also invited this year to attend and received the afterglow from Dr. Bob who has been a friend for many years. He was my initial inspiration for getting into Madeira and I told that story at TTT last year in his presence. In fact, I am planning a trip for him as I type ... along w/ several of his friends. Anyway, good to hear the story Reidar. You are famous and that guy must have an amazing memory to be able to all of a sudden pick you out by having seen your photo in that article.
Do you know his name?
So weird how these things work.
