on line. I went to tcwc and premier cru. The 499 looked like s good price for Nacional and they had good pricing on the taylor, dow, and grahams...I think the tcwc was good on niepoort and cockburns...

That seems like an exceptional deal to me. If I had the cash available, I'd purchase a couple of cases of 2011 Nacional at that price and lay them down for a decade or two. I have a hard time believing that it won't go up in value by at least 50%, and probably double, in the next 10 years.

Just look at prices for recent vintages of Nacional on winesearcher.com...

2003 is reasonably stable at $700-$800
2001 is listed once at $500 then jumps to $1500
2000 is $630 then rapidly climbs to $1000
1997 is $1000 then jumps to $1200
1994 is $1000

If the word on the street about 2011 is to be believed, 2003, 1997, and 1994 (especially 1994) are likely the best comparisons for 2011 quality-wise. The big difference is the production level - 2011 releases are much smaller than any of those others, so the supply side of the equation is pretty limited. If the economy recovers at all in the next 10 years, a $500 investment now is almost certain to be worth $750 in 10 years and $1000 in 20. And I think that's a conservative estimate because I think that when the economy actually rebounds that the prices of fine wines and high-end Port in particular are going to balloon again.

The trick is finding $12,000 to $18,000 lying around available to be invested long term...

Agreed, its a good deal for sure for Nacional becuase its more valuable to me to have it as early as possible in its life than trying to buy it 15 to 20 years from now not knowing where the heck its been. Website said they only had 24 available, I didn't want to be greedy!

Still, I think that's a pretty conservative estimate for the Nacional. This is a pretty small vintage with pretty high expectations. If it really is as good as at least one critic has claimed, we're could be looking at $1500/bottle in 20 years.

my S&P funds are returning me 9.4% compounded over a 10 year period.

3x 2011 Vesuvio Capella

Found a 2006 Quinta do Crasto LBV (Unfiltered) at a retailer not far from me for $16. A deal too good to pass up.

12x Niepoort LBV 1997 (never had these before, I am very curious about this one! ), at an (I think) reasonable price of €15 a piece (@ auction);
8x 1970 VP from Amondio's (never heard from this producer. Anyone that has??)

13 bottles of 2003 Martinez LBV Port for a killer deal of $10 per bottle. I felt like I was in the UK for a little bit with that deal
