Actually, I don't think there is a distinction in the IVDP regs between 40 and over 40. It is one category that we typically refer to as "40 year old," but if you want, you can say "over 40" on the label. Here's the simple page

I have a Royal Oporto Over 40 years old, bottled in 1988 and the color of the wine look like a white lagrima of Ramos pinto for example, and for me the wine was a tawny very old. And now reading that page i see the expression +40 years old on the special white, hehe.
I thing i have a special +40 white and now a 40 tawny hehe

"40" and "Over 40" are the same designation. As I recall, it is listed as "40" in Europe and "Over 40" or "40+" in the US.

Officially, 10, 20, 30, and 40 (or 40+) are the only ages the IVDP allows for Tawnies with an Indication of Age. Though a while back (8-10 years?... it was roughly 2006, I think) Porto Rocha was able to bottle and sell a "Glorious 50th Anniversary" Tawny Port. I believe that it was technically a Tawny Reserve for IVDP purposes, and not a Tawny with an Indication of Age.

But for Garrafeira Particular, or for Vinho Generoso, all bets are off. They can't be labeled and shipped as Port, but if a winemaker wants to hand you a bottle from his personal stock... let's just say that I've seen all kinds of crazy old Ports from family barrels that aren't official as far as the IVDP is concerned, and I'm sure that Roy and Andy have seen many, many more than I have.

Yes, these exist for both White Ports and Tawny Ports. Just as an example, Kopke produces all 8 - 10, 20, 30, 40 for both Tawny and White Port.

I am not trying to get Roy OFF the hook....But I know at least two Australian Tawnys with the age of 50....
I know they where striped the Rights of calling there fortified wines for Port many years ago, But aparently they still do.

The one "Australian 50 year old Port" should be quite expensive. More than a couple of tousands.

I have never my self tasted an Australian Tawny. And if I should the Yalumba likes my wallet better than the Penfolds 50 years. I have seen a pricetag of 3.000 $ for one bottle. But it looks beautiful...

And sorry Eric, the famous goatcheesecake would have suplimented the old Niepoorts me and Roy had the other Night. Maby another time

That was an auction price, but even at retail I think it will be a lot cheaper than that Penfolds.

2001 Quinta Vale d. Maria Vintage Port was a heck of a nice suprise tonight. Worthy of 93 points and loads of upside here.

1/2 bottle of Fonseca Bin 27 last night. Much better than it was a number of years ago. I was impressed.

Taylor decanted this 7 hours prior and I think that was a perfect amount of time to aerate. I shared this with Glenn last night. He was at 93/94 and guessing at 2009. The nose and flavors are really excellent. Open one, you won't be disappointed. It reminds me of a younger version of 1991 Croft if I had to make a comparison.

For tonights familydinner I have opend a Dows 20 years bottled in 1994, and a birthday Port from Warres celebrating their 300 years as a Porthouse.
Allready I Can announce the Dow as the wotn, ore Maby I am the winner! Opening 2 of my lesser bottles, makes more room for ........ More Niepoorts

By the Way, the Danish Capital is in Danish "KobenHavn" or translated to english: Buy a Port.

I just find that very amusing....

Thank you. One more to add to my never ending pieces of what I consider usefull, and others consider useless, pieces of information. I do believe this is the only new thing I have learned today, and before I go to sleep at night I like to remember what I have learend.
