I'm afraid you answered your own question. Spare time isn't something I have a lot of, and when I do, SE Michigan is not a place I regularly find myself in. But you make a great case for visiting.

For some reason SE Michigan now seems like it's just around the corner from Derbyshire, UK
But seriously, Peter, that is an outstanding thing to do and if were up to me you would win the 1st prize in the #Portday competition for this selfless act alone
Roy Hersh wrote:Speaking of that, Peter, are you going to be holding any special Port tasting on #PortDay in SE Michigan?
Uh-oh.
I must have been asleep at the switch. Remind me - when is #PortDay?
(Obviously, I have not planned any such tasting as yet. But, I might, depending on when it is.)
EDIT:
All right. A little looking around found the date. (Jan 27, 2011. Is this permanent or will it be the last Friday in January in future years?)
I don't suppose that a few people sitting around sipping Ferreira 20 is going to win any prizes, but we can offer a sip to passers-by, and remind them that Real Port comes from Portugal.

That works too! Maybe break open one of those VP's you don't like for those passerby's to sip

I feel grateful for those who laid down bottles in the past, and wish to play my part for the future.
It is my hope that some of my bottles will survive me by more than a century.
Good point. If we don't let a few bottles slip by, there will be no old Ports for future generations. I guess we don't have to insist that we have kids or grand-kids who are fond of port to lay down some bottles for the future. The really sad thing would be to send some bottles on to the future and have them wasted by someone who doesn't really care about Port.
