It came from The Chicago Wine Company retail side. It actually popped up in Wine-Searcher.

Just popped into a local supermarket as I am jonesing for a Madeira without having to pop an expensive Vintage bottling. $42 for a Leacock's 10 year old Medium Rich Bual. Does anyone know if this is aged in estufa or canteiro?

From the MWC web site:

"The premium wines (the very fine 5, 10 and 15 Year Old wines, single harvest wines, and Frasqueira or Vintage Vintage Madeiras) are made with the following grape varieties: Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey and Terrantez. These wines are exclusively aged by the “canteiro process”."

Thanks Gary. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that Terrantez. I've had quite a few bottles of that in the last couple of years. Bought more in 2012 too.

1 x Justino's Old Reserve 10 yr Fine Rich @ $20
Seemed like a decent price for a 10yr old.
Big caramel flavors as I opened it, along w this weird green-ish acid aroma that i hope goes away in time.
Planning on leaving it in the decanter as from my v limited experience Madeira truly benefits from being aired out.

I am just finishing a bottle of it I bought in 2012. Took long time in the bottle to hit its sweet spot once opened.

I drank one of the 1988T (bottled in 2012), then a 1988T Harvest (bottled in 2006) for comparison.

The 1988T was very much like a sercial the first two days, very astringent. It was very good, but not quite like a terrantez. That went away, but the wine was probably the driest terrantez that I've had. And possibly the best all-around dry madeira that I've had. I ordered 6 more.

The 1988T Harvest was less dry and lacked the astringency. It was also less rich than the vintage version.

Tasted it again today after letting it sit for 10 days in the decanter. The green-ish acid aroma is mostly gone. Tasting pretty decent now. Not a mouthful of smoothness and flavor, but the alcohol has integrated well and drinks nicely. Not bad at $20, though at a lower price, the 2007 Fonseca Lbv is much much greater value.

I was going to bid on several of those, but then I saw that both you and Andy were bidding... so I passed. [friends.gif]

Thank you David. There were a lot of listings on winebid, and a lot more bidding activity to go with them, more like eBay snarfing. I hope you got what you wanted Andy.

Other than a couple Ports and an old dry wine (bought on a lark just for giggles as it was cheap) I lost all my other bids.

And thanks as well Dave!
