Good to know as I've got one on "death row", to be consumed in the near future.

Sweet and soft. But still alive.
Just the Way I like my Ports!
That is an amazing looking bottle Allan, thank you for posting a picture and please don't discard it. Out of curiosity where did you find it?

Mahmoud.
Hi Mahmoud

I spend countless hours on Portuguese websites Selling Port wine. Private or auctions.
I look for bottles of Vinho do Portos older than 1970. And sometimes these really old bottles comes along.
Most of the time there are quite splendid, on rare occations they end up in the sink [cheers.gif]

Was the Casa do Douro bottle the old white they bottled some years ago?

1955 Quinta do Noval VP for the last game of the Cubs vs. Indians in the World Series. The Cubs broke their losing streak since 1908 and I thought of opening a Madeira from that year, but the Noval was already decanting.

Loved it. Only one or two left, but it was worth opening for this historic occasion ... and what a game, too! :scholar:

1983 Ramos Pinto - I needed something capable of lasting in the decanter for a week as I had lots of nights away from home this week and I look forward to finishing off the decanter tonight after it was opened on Monday night.

Roy--

You're going to love it. Dense and weighty. Nose has some blackberry. I bit of a fruit bomb with that typical Crasto reed grass (I can never place the flaver but every Crasto LBV has it). A little tannic. I was quite impressed. Still have most of it in the decanter.

Single Quinta tasting in my club yesterday evening. They were served blind and I threw in a RP83 just to see if my members would be able to spot the real vintage among the 9 wines.

1983 Ramos Pinto (94+p)
1987 Croft Quinta de Roeda (86p)
1987 Fonseca Quinta da Panascal (92p)

1992 Dow's Quinta do Bomfim (91+p)
1996 Smith Woodhouse Madalenda (89p)
1996 Quinta do Vesuvio (92p)

2004 Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos (88p)
2005 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas (90p)
2014 Ramos Pinto Quinta do Bom Retiro (89p)

The real vintage was in a class of its own, but it is also a top VP that costs almost twice that of any of the other bottles. Almost all my members share that opinion.

The second was the Vesuvio which was delicious and elegant as ever. Is drinking well now though still has room for improvements. Not the best year but a good solid wine. The Panascal had a nice sweetness and voluptuousness about it and a nice spicy character. This will just improve with time. A really interesting wine. The Bomfim is now my dark horse and I think in 10 years time could be a real knock out. It had great freshness and a very tasty mint flavour that I really enjoyed. I kept wanting to drink more of it.

The Vargellas, Madalena and Malvedos was the middle of the pack, lead by the Taylor's. Solid wines at their current state but not more.

The Roeda was over the hill and was very bitter and tawny like. I will not be drinking that one again.

Finally the youngster from Bom Retiro. This is unlike any port I have ever had. It had a powerful pine and resin smell which was also very much present in the taste. Very peculiar. At its current state this wine is so powerful and clumsy that it is very difficult to enjoy. The question is how it will end up in 20-30 years time. But for now, it should be left alone in the dark.
