Man, I wish I could find a way to be involved in this. Seems damn near impossible for a newbie to break into this hobby. Ah well. Enjoy what I'm sure will be an unbelievable tasting.

It is easy to get started, but jumping into such an epic Madeira tasting isn't a trivial exercise. You start with a few bottles, new and old, and eventually you find yourself in need of cellar or offsite storage. I attended the first big FTLOP gala a few years ago and that took some effort to source bottles. Today I would just grab the needed bottles from my cellar. Of course if I drank my one or two old colheitas, I'd be back to the shopping board for those.

I can assure you this will be an epic Madeira event, possibly one of the truly great ones in history in fact. The average age of bottles will likely exceed 200 years per bottle. I will not start to lock into guest chef and venue until after Thanksgiving and with lots of work ahead in the planning this will be a lot of fun.

Like Peter, I am very much looking forward to meeting you Reidar.

More details as they unfold.

After this thread died down for several months, today is the culmination of 14 months of due diligence in organizing what will come to be known as the single most historic Madeira event ever held. Representatives of a half dozen countries converge today to enjoy Terrantez, the likes of which will never be seen again in one place. The full list of wines and a comprehensive article will be in the upcoming FTLOP newsletter. We have a videographer/photographer and one high visibility wine journalist attending for posterity sake. Without divulging too much here, suffice it to say that the number of 18th century bottlings is astounding one of which significantly pre-dates the founding of the USA. I am looking forward to meeting some of the most serious Madeira collectors on earth, every bit as much as I can't wait to delve into the lineup.

Suffice to say, I wish this event to be a great success and I look forward to reading all about it in the coming months. If and when another such occasion of equal significance or not comes to pass, if it's anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, I hope to get involved in some way.

Curiosity question:
Besides being willing and able to bring a bottle dating back to Henri the Navigator or close how were the invitations extended? In other words how were the Chosen Ones chosen?

Having seen and heard Wagner's Ring cycle live, I think the Valhalla remark is a very fair analogy.

The invites were extended by email. The invitees were chosen based on their ability to produce one of the holy grails on our list of Terrantez bottlings that were deemed fitting and proper. That and the willingness to come to NY, share dinner wine and their commentary during the tasting itself. It was that simple.
