This is likely true for many spirits... The first time I tried whiskey it was harsh, peaty and far too much alcohol for my liking. I am older and wiser now and have been priviledged enough to try several varieties of good single malt scotch whiskeys which are indeed fine sipping drinks.
The trick is having someone experienced show you the way. If what you are trying is a poor first example, they can give you reason to try a different bottle, no matter what the alcohol.
