For The Love Of Port

Given $250 to spend on Port wine ... what would you buy? Would you look to buy one great bottle, a case of inexpensive Ports or something in between ... if so, what kind?

I don´t think I have ever spent more than USD 150 on a bottle. If given 250 I would probably buy a single expensive bottle (old VP)

I'd buy a nice 20 year tawny like Andresen or Ferreira and an '80-85 Graham Vintage. Anything left over, I would spend on Kirkland/Costco 10 Year Tawny.

I'd probably try to find one nice bottle - maybe I'd get lucky and there'd be a '66 or '63 Fonseca, or a '66 Graham available at that price!

I would take the $250 to the UK, change it for £GBP, add a very small number of £ of my own and buy 2 bottles of F66

First I'd check the auctions to see what is going
If I was going buy retail I'd probably buy a 07 Quinta do Noval or Warres as I know I can find them at the moment, then I'd spend the remainder on 03 Quinta do Noval LBV which would probably only buy me two bottles of that.

You first had me thinking about Dalva Golden White, but Paul reminded me that I'm still lacking in a few 2007s, notably Niepoort and Noval, so I'm not sure. I'd check prices and pick from those three options.

There was that offer for 20 yo Portal a week or so ago. Could get a whole case with change.

I would buy a 2007 Dow, a 2000 Grahams (both high on respective wines of the year lists), and with the 50 bucks or so left over, probably a 2001 or 2003 Quinta de Roriz or a 2005 taylor vargellas if I can find it that cheap. Shove all three in the cellar for the long term.

I am over buying anything too old I can not put good provenance on, too many disappointments..I love having a cellar!! All this new stuff is going to taste good in 20 years...

Great Vintage Port rewards those with patience. I have at least 300 bottles that are still in my possession, purchased between 1985-1995.

The percentage which disappoint me (upon opening) is very small, although never fun when it happens.

Ironic topic to me. I recently got a gift of $350 at a very nice wine store with a large walk in temperature controlled room. What I did was buy a 94 Graham, a 2000 Niepoort, a 96 Malvedos which ate up $225, with the balance I got a mix of LBV's and Rubies (9 total for the case discount) so I'd have something to enjoy now. The three nice bottles went into offsite storage. The rest I've been working on!!

I just picked up a 2000 Grahams over Thanksgiving weekend from a place by my in-laws house. Still a bit of a strange feeling to know that something you just bought will take another 20+ years before its ready to enjoy.

Given the $250 budget, I'd seek out one nice bottle to enjoy in the closer future. Newer bottles can be had for less, so they are easier on the budget to pick up here and there.

Ignore the Dow and Fonseca, as those were purchased locally and a lot less than $250, less than $65 in fact. The other three were purchased together and just over the $250 number. I bought two really nice bottles (1991 Noval Nacional and 1992 Taylor), and three really cheap defenders (2002 Broadbent LBV) at $11.50 each.

Wow, you were able to get a '91 Nacional and a '92 Taylor for less than $250?

I paid $180 just for the Taylor! Granted, that was a couple of years ago before the crash, but still...
