5 bottles of 1879 Malmsey Madeira FOR SALE

Post by Roy Hersh »

For sale by Tito Cabral de Noronha:

The bottles are stored in a Mini wine Cellar in a basement in my House in Funchal, Madeira Island, with a humidity content of 70% and a temperature of 16ºC operated by an electric machine. Madeira Island has a moisture content of about 80% or more for what I turn to a dehumidifier set at 70%.

Madeira Wine Malvazia 1879
This wine as from the inheritance of João Martins da Silva, born in 1860 and deceased in 1940. He was a ship-owner and founded the Madeira Navigation Agency. He supplied the boats that passed by Madeira during the 1st World War. He was a shareholder of the railway of Monte and of the Bank of Madeira. He also owned the Company Insular (pastas).
He owned the grape variety of Malvazia and vinified his own wines annually storing them in wooden casks, wich was thus inherited by his children. This wine was bottled in 1943 for occasion of his daughter Matilde Martins da Silva de Castro Jorge wedding to the medical doctor António de Castro Jorge.

Alcohol - 19.20%
Acidity - volatile (C2H4O2) = 2.64 gr/dm3
Baume degree (20 ° C) = 1.4
Dry Extract (excluding sugar) = 35.2 g/dm3
Density 20 ° C = 1013 gr/dm3
Total acidity (C4H6O4) = 74.10 gr/dm3
pH = 3.61

Tasting Notes
Visual Impressions
Clear and bright, dark golden copper color with greenish cast, foam and slow tear fleeting revealing much glycerin.
Olfactory impressions
Characteristic, very lush, intense, revealing a bouquet of exotic woods, resins and balsams with notes of spices and roasted confectionery.
Gustatory impressions
Medium sweet and concentrated, thick and soft, with very long aftertaste and fresh aftertaste leaving a very spicy bouquet, resembling molasses and curry.

From what I've seen, the fill level is directly between the base neck and cork on some ... right in the middle of the neck and on others well into the neck. Looks solid from what I can tell, but the rest is up to you.
Photos can be seen in PORTraits if you are interested. The owner will be following here, so if interested in one or more, please say so. I think the price is in the range of $800 USD + freight. He will be in touch by email.

Sounds like a very interesting Madeira with great history and provenance, but the price was a stumbling block for me.

I agree--price is a little too much right now, especially considering I just went idiotically hog wild on a Skinner Auction last week...sigh.

5 bottles of 1879 Malmsey Madeira FOR SALE

Post by Tito Noronha »

I am willing to negotiate the price of bottles of Madeira wine Malmsey 1879. Can be sold individually or together. The price is negotiable. Those interested can contact me via e-mail: beatriznoronha_@hotmail.com or through a private message to the forum.
It is noteworthy that was offered by the Regional Government of Madeira one bottle from this lot, to the King of Spain, King Juan Carlos, during his visit to Madeira Island in July 2009.
