Any Info on 1957 Moreira Colheita?

Post by Mike Kerr »

Looking at making a possible purchase but was wondering if anyone had any experience with this particular one before. I've never heard of Moreira before.

Bottling for the one I'm looking at is 2000, so it's a good 49 years old.

Mike,

I had this wine about a year ago and it was from the same year of bottling. I have had the '37, '38, '41, '50, '52, '57, '63, '64, '65, and '66, and this particular colheita, the '57 was my least favorite. Some of the older colheitas are pretty good, and have a decent QPR. But this particular year's colheita was not so fine. Here are my notes from July a year ago:

Moreira 1957 Colheita Port
Medium brown-orange in color, with a medium amber rim and great clarity. Quite fragrant of acetone, old wood, nut and resin fragrances with some molasses as well and a hint of mandarin orange. Strongly resinous on the palate with moderate sweetness and acidity, with significant alcohol and brown sugar flavors, not well integrated, and a short to medium length finish largely resinous as well. Only Fair, and just drinkable. 76/100

My birth year is 1957 and I can tell you that if you are looking for a great Port from that year, seek out the 1957 Kopke which is a FANTASTIC bottling. If you can't find it let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

I have not had the Moreira from that vintage. However last week, I took a jeep ride in the back hills of Rancao, and saw the Moreira vineyards. They were in the area that was hit by the hail storm.
