For The Love Of Port

We often read here about what people are buying or tasting. But I was curious if there are some FTLOP'ers who are also occasionally on the selling side of the transaction?

Nope never sold a bottle of Port. I prefer to drink them and share them with others.

No. I buy selectively and share indiscriminately but never sell. I do not buy large quantities of any one port.

I have only "sold" port to port-loving friends. I only do this when I have bought more bottles/cases than I want for myself, or when I want to fund the purchase of a wine that I don't have. In all truth, these are not so much "sales" as "swaps" so I'm not sure these instances count as selling my port.

I don't think I have ever sold a bottle of port, and I can't imagine that I ever will. I have occasionally contributed a number of bottles to a tasting and been paid for some of the bottles, or have privately sold a bottle to another port lover so that they can contribute that bottle to a tasting.

Recently though, I have become hung up about the number of bottles I have in my cellar and the huge number that I will need if I am to be able to drink a couple of bottles a week for the rest of my life. This has caused me to start to refuse to sell bottles, even to other port lovers, but instead I am now swapping bottles so that the number in my cellar does not reduce.

Nope. But a couple of months ago I sold 150 bottles of wine to my co-workers - mostly Washington reds, Bordeaux and Sauternes - so I could BUY more port!

Having benefitted from one of those "swaps" I agree. It wasn't really a sale so much as a purchase-with-intermediary-providing-time-delay.

I don't sell my Port, but like others I'll swap it. If someone really needed a specific bottle I'd certainly help them out, but I'd sell it to them at the price I paid so it wouldn't really be a sale in the sense that I think Roy's talking about.

Altough i've only a few bottles in my collection, i sold a few colheitas with some profit.

But i regard these as means to gather and invest more cash in good opportunities, them sell some more bottles and steadily grow my portfolio, in numbers and age of my colheitas.

P.S. one of the bottles that i sold 2 months ago was a Barros 1947 colheita. Wasn't mine , just brokered because it was from a friend. If i stumble across another i'll let you know

I've sold or rather split purchases as they were too expensive for me to claim the whole purchase. Once I have it in my possession, it's unlikely I will sell from there, but I would consider any and all offers.

No, never have and probably never will, even though my collection already is too large for my own consumption and it's uncertain if my children ever are going to develop a preference for port.
I however did trade some of my Bordeaux wines which increased enormously in price over the years (f.i. Pavillon Rouge Margaux) to some VP last year. Somehow it doesn't bother me drinking a VP of €100+, but a red wine of the same price??

I have never sold any of my port, but I once traded a '94 Noval for a '98 Chateauneuf du Pape.

I've never bought any Port as an investment with the idea of selling, nor have I sold off part of my collection at any time. I have split a purchase, and like Moses above, I bought a six pack that was more than I could really afford with the intention of selling some of the bottles.

Though because i only tend to buy by the case when i think it represents a bargain, it is actually quite hard to do when it comes down to it...

Table wine is different...most of my port collection has been funded by selling down 08 Bordeaux that i had initially purchased with the full intention of drinking. Though looking at current prices, i suppose i would also consider selling my 2000 and 2003 Taylors to fund some Fonseca 85 or Graham 94.
